What is a prototype in UX design?

A prototype is an interactive and functional representation of a digital product that simulates the final user experience. Contrary to Mockups which are static, prototypes allow you to navigate between screens, test interactions and validate the user journey prior to development. Prototypes are essential in the process of Design Thinking and save time and resources by identifying usability issues early on.

What are the different types of prototypes?

There are several levels of fidelity for prototypes:

Low fidelity prototype : Quick sketch on paper or clickable wireframes, focused on structure and flows.

Medium fidelity prototype : Interactive version with basic navigation, often created with tools like Figma or Adobe XD.

High fidelity prototype : Version very similar to the final product with animations, transitions and real content.

Functional prototype : Version with real data and connected backend, often called MVP.

How do you test a prototype effectively?

Prototype testing is crucial to validate the user experience. It is necessary to define realistic use scenarios, observe user behaviors without influencing them, and document the points of friction. Tests can be carried out in person or remotely, with screen recording tools to analyze interactions. The feedback collected makes it possible to iterate on the design before the final development phase.
