Google AI Overviews is an AI-generated summary box from Google that appears above the classic search results. Powered by the Gemini, it directly answers the user's query by drawing on multiple web sources that it explicitly cites. Launched in the United States in May 2024 during Google I/O, it was deployed in France in March 2025 and now covers over 100 countries. For SEO, it's the most significant evolution since the arrival of Featured Snippets.
What's the difference between AI Overviews and classic search results?
Classic results display a list of ten blue links that the user must open to find their answer. AI Overviews, however, directly summarize the answer in natural language from multiple sources, with visible links to the right or bottom of the block.
